The largest provider of rehabilitation care in Maryland, the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute, (formerly known as Kernan Hospital) is Maryland's first orthopaedic specialty hospital. Serving the Baltimore community for over 115 years, the hospital offers the most advanced orthopaedic surgery for adults and children as well as rehabilitation services for helping patients of all ages overcome physical limitations and maximize functional independence.

University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is a leader in the treatment of musculoskeletal disease, joint replacement, sports injury and dental surgery for adults and children with developmental disabilities. Offering state-of-the-art operating suites and surgical intensive care unit staffed by experienced physicians and nurses affiliated with the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is an integral part of the University of Maryland Medical System.

With 137 beds, University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is the largest inpatient rehabilitation hospital and provider of rehabilitation services in the state, where patients make the transition to rehabilitation after recovering from traumatic injury, cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, and other illnesses. As a member of the University of Maryland Medical System, patients have access to academic medical specialists and research in the areas of stroke, spinal cord and brain injury, physical therapy and orthopaedic surgery. Specialty programs are available for rheumatology, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, other neuro-degenerative disorders and a broad range of outpatient services including the University of Maryland Pain Management Center, and the University of Maryland's Center for Integrative Medicine.

As a part of the University of Maryland Medical System, the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has access to the vast resources of a major academic medical center, while offering the personal attention of a small community hospital. University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is accredited by both The Joint Commission, and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, with specialty accreditation in Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, and Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation. We are the first hospital in Maryland to receive Stroke Specialty Program certification from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
