Dr. Banagan completed her undergraduate degree at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. She graduated summa cum laude with honors as valedictorian of her class. She received her medical degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. She completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and a fellowship in spine surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Banagan served on the American Orthopaedic Association's Academic Leadership Committee and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Medicine and Women in Science Steering Committee. She was elected to the AAMC Organization of Resident Representatives Administrative Board. She is the author of multiple book chapters and articles and has presented her research both nationally and internationally.
