Peter H. Gorman

Peter H. Gorman, M.D.

Dr. Gorman is an associate professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is the Chief of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. Gorman's main research interests are in the field of spinal cord injury medicine. He is currently the principal researcher in a study comparing the use of robotic treadmill training to aquatic therapy in persons with incomplete spinal cord injury. He is also co-investigator in a trial of auricular acupuncture in spinal cord injury related pain. He continues to participate in numerous pharmaceutical trials, and previously was a co-investigator in a study that led to the approval of a neuroprosthetic functional electrical stimulation device to restore hand function in persons with tetraplegia. Dr. Gorman also closely collaborates with several Shock Trauma investigators on clinical studies of new acute management approaches in traumatic spinal cord injury.

Clinically, Dr. Gorman specializes in taking care of persons with spinal cord injury and/or disease. His practice includes inpatient acute rehabilitation and outpatient longitudinal care, management of spasticity with botulinum toxin injections and implanted baclofen pumps,. He sees patients both at UMROI (formerly Kernan Hospital) and at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Dr. Gorman has been named as a “Top Doc” by Baltimore Magazine in 2012 and 2013.

Glenn J. Kehs, M.D.

Glenn J. Kehs, M.D.

Dr. Kehs is an assistant professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and is the director of the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. Kehs received his medical degree at Vanderbilt University and served a Neurology residency at the University of North Carolina Hospital. He completed a neurologic rehabilitation fellowship at Braintree Hospital in Braintree, MA.

Dr. Kehs' interests include neurorehabiliation, stroke and aphasia. He is board certified in neurology and neurorehabilitation.

Aleyamma J. Matthew, M.D.

Dr. Matthew is an assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and is an internist on the Stroke Unit at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. Matthew received her medical degree from Medical College in Gulberga, India. She completed her residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. She is certified in internal medicine.

Richard B. Peters, M.D.

Dr. Peters is an assistant professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and a neurologist on the Traumatic Brain Injury unit at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. Peters received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  He completed his residency in Neurology at Georgetown University Center, Washington, D.C., and a clinical fellowship in EMG and neuromuscular diseases at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Peters is board certified in Neurology. He provides medical/neurological care to brain injured patients undergoing acute and chronic rehabilitation at Kernan Hospital. Dr. Peters also conducts a general neurology and an electromyographic outpatient clinic at Kernan.

Melita M. Theyagaraj, M.D.

Melita M. Theyagaraj, M.D.

Dr. Theyagaraj is an instructor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in the Division of Rehabilitation. She is also the Director of Multitrauma Inpatient Services at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. Theyagarej received her medical degree from Madras Medical College, University of Madras, in India. She completed her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the State University of New York.

Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Dr. Theyagaraj has special interests in:

George Wittenberg

George Wittenberg, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. George F. Wittenberg is associate professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Previously, he was the director of the rehabilitation program within the Department of Neurology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.

He obtained his doctorate degree in Biology at the University of California, San Diego, in 1991 and completed medical school in 1993 at the same university. Dr. Wittenberg had further clinical and research training at Washington University, St. Louis, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His clinical interests are in neurorehabilitation, stroke, and movement disorders. He sees both inpatients and outpatients at the VA Medical Center and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI). Dr. Wittenberg has specialty interest in the management of spasticity with Botulinum Toxin and with Baclofen Pumps.

Henry S. York, M.D.

Henry S. York M.D.

Dr. Henry S. York is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is the Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Dr. York received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 2002. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University in 2006, and his fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI) (formerly Kernan Hospital) in 2007.
