The Adapted Sports Festival at Kernan is dedicated to enabling individuals of all abilities to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Participation in sports and recreational pursuits helps to make this possible.
Designed as a fun-filled day for individuals with physical disabilities and their families, the day includes opportunities to participate in adapted sports such as wheelchair basketball, quad rugby, golf, hand cycling, wheelchair slalom, lawn bocce and adapted dance.
Community adapted recreation programs available at the event include Kernan Kollision - Kernan Hospital's new quad rugby team - Forest Park Golf Courses' adapted golf program, and Baltimore Adapted Recreation and Sports (BARS).
The festival will feature a panel presentation of disabled athletes as keynote speakers. Kernan Hospital's recreational therapy staff, as well as other rehabilitation professionals at Kernan, encourages patients to explore a wide range of outdoor activities. This process is incorporated into the rehabilitation program at Kernan, and continues once patients are discharged back to their homes and communities.
Current and former patients, as well as individuals with disabilities living in the community, are encouraged to participate in a range of recreational activities. All activities are supervised by trained staff, taking into account individual needs and abilities. Equipment can be adapted as necessary and patients are encouraged to utilize newly developed skills and techniques acquired through rehabilitation.
