The goal of the Multiple Sclerosis Day program is to enable individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of independence and quality of life. The Day Program provides participants with opportunities to develop and maintain functional skills, as well as providing chances for social and supportive interaction with other individuals with MS.

Activities

A therapeutically structured program, activities in a typical day of the Multiple Sclerosis Day program include:

  • Physical exercise
  • Stress management
  • Leisure counseling
  • Communication skills development
  • Daily discussion groups

Ongoing social activities outside the hospital setting are scheduled frequently, such as

  • Recreational activities
  • Community outings

Ongoing participant education is also an important part of the program and several sessions per month are devoted to

  • Professional presentations and
  • Research updates.

Staff

The Day Program is directed by Janice Wilson, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) who supervises a full-time staff and volunteers.

Cost

The Day Program is funded by US Against MS and, therefore, is free. However, participants are expected to cover the costs of their lunches as well as any costs associated with scheduled community outings. Transportation is also the responsibility of the patient. However, the MTA Paratransit Service and County Ride programs do make stops at Kernan.

Funding

US Against MS is small group who concentrates most of its energy on developing programs that complement rather than duplicate those already available in the local community. The Day Program fits the focus of US Against MS by providing information and services that would enhance the daily life and activities of Multiple Sclerosis patients and their families in Maryland.
