Food Options

Eating Facilities/Cafeteria

UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has several dining areas for patients and their families.

If you are at UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute for rehabilitation, you will eat most of your meals in the dining room or in your room on the unit. Sometimes there are situations that may require you to have in-room service.

If you are at UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute for surgery, you will receive your meals in your room. If you have dietary or meal concerns, contact your nurse.

Cafeteria Hours (Monday – Friday)

  • Breakfast: 6:30 am – 9:30 am
  • Continental Breakfast: 9:30 am – 10:15 am
  • Lunch: 11 am – 2:30 pm
  • Snacks and Lite Fare: 3 pm – 4 pm
  • Dinner: 4 pm – 6:30 pm

Restaurants, Take-out and Delivery

Ask at security or your local nurses station for menus of places that deliver to UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute.

ATM

An ATM is located in the main lobby of the hospital.

Healing Garden

Kernan Hospital’s Healing Garden was designed as a rehabilitation tool for patients to help prepare them for their home and community environment when they leave the hospital.

Chapel

The chapel is located on the terrace level. There are services offered every Sunday; please ask one of your caregivers for the time of the service, and let them know if you are interested in attending.

Clergy

If you would like a member of the clergy to come visit you while you are a patient, we can call them and make them aware of your request, or you may call them directly.

Our cafeteria is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It offers a variety of meal choices.

Laundry

Families are encouraged to label all patients' clothing and take items home for laundering. If this is not possible, free washers and dryers are available for patient and family use on each floor in the rehab center. You will need to bring detergent.

Telephone

Local telephone service is free for all UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute patients. You may bill long distance calls to your own telephone calling card. If you have any trouble with your telephone service, please call the UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute operator (dial 0). If you need TTY (text telephone for the deaf) equipment, please speak with your nurse, speech therapist or case manager. Pay phones are located off the Grand Hall and on the Terrace Level near the conference center.

Television

Each patient is provided with free cable television service.

Tutoring/School

If you are 17 or younger, you must, by law, keep up with your schoolwork. A teacher from your school system may be provided to work with you. Discuss this with your case manager.

Smoking

We are committed to a healthy environment for our patients, visitors and staff. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the facility or on the property.
