Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
People with a brain injury are likely to have difficulty with memory, communication, thinking and reasoning skills. They may also have trouble behaving appropriately in social situations.
The Inpatient Brain Injury Program at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute offers a supportive, therapeutic environment for adults and adolescents undergoing traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Through our comprehensive program, patients reach their highest possible level of independence and return to their everyday activities.
Patient Care
Your interdisciplinary team will hold weekly meetings to discuss and evaluate your progress and care. Family/caregiver conferences — to be attended by you, the interdisciplinary team and your family members/caregivers — will be arranged as needed to review your medical status, ability to perform tasks independently and rehabilitation goals. During these conferences, your family members/caregivers are encouraged to ask questions and express any concerns they have about your progress and at-home care needs.
Family Involvement
Family involvement in brain injury rehabilitation is paramount. The Inpatient Brain Injury Program features an array of educational offerings designed to train family members/caregivers on the techniques needed to assist their loved one, as well as to help understand the effects of brain injuries. Family/caregiver and support groups are also available.
The Brain Injury Program is separate from other patient care units, has its own dining and activity areas and features state-of-the-art patient care areas. Our comfortable settings reduce anxiety, promote quicker recovery and maintain patients' dignity and quality of life.
The Low Level Brain Injury Program provides medical and rehabilitative treatment to help bring patients to their highest level of functioning. When patients recover enough to participate in an inpatient brain injury recovery program, they are transferred to our rehabilitation program. For those patients whose recovery will take longer, the staff helps families/caregivers in making plans for placement at other levels of care.
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program provides individual, goal-directed rehabilitation services to help each patient achieve their highest possible level of physical, cognitive and behavioral functioning in preparation for their return home.
Multiple approaches to therapy focus on the improvement of daily living skills. Patients in this program may be offered therapy six days a week — based on the needs and tolerance of the patient. They also have access to outstanding rehabilitation facilities, including well-equipped gyms, healing garden, sports courts and beautiful grounds.
Outpatient Follow-up Care
As patients and their families/caregivers prepare for discharge, the rehabilitation team will introduce them to our broad range of outpatient therapy services. These services, all of which follow a coordinated plan of care, include neuro-psychological follow-up care; speech-language pathology; occupational and physical therapies; and physician care.
Brain Injury Support Group
Our brain injury support group is for people with a brain injury, and their families/caregivers. There is also a weekly brain injury education program offered to families/caregivers. An additional resource, located near the brain injury unit, is the Brain Injury Association for Maryland.

University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
